What are the precautions for welding stainless steel pipe fittings

1. To prevent corrosion caused by heating during welding, the weld length should not be too long, about 20% shorter than that of carbon steel welding rods. The arc should not be too long, and rapid cooling between layers is recommended, with narrow weld beads.

2. Stainless steel pipe fittings harden quickly after welding, making them prone to cracking. When welding with typical stainless steel pipe fittings, preheating to above 300℃ and slow cooling to around 700℃ after welding are necessary. If post-weld heat treatment is not possible, stainless steel pipe fitting welding rods should be used.

3. To improve corrosion resistance and weldability, appropriate amounts of stabilizing elements such as Ti, Nb, and Mo are added to stainless steel pipe fittings, resulting in slightly better weldability than regular stainless steel. When using typical chromium stainless steel welding rods, preheating to above 200℃ and tempering to around 800℃ after welding are required. If post-weld heat treatment is not possible, chromium-nickel stainless steel welding rods should be used.

4. Stainless steel pipe welding electrodes possess excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, and are widely used in chemical, fertilizer, petroleum, and medical machinery manufacturing.

5. Stainless steel pipe welding electrodes are available in titanium-calcium type and low-hydrogen type. Titanium-calcium type electrodes can be used with both AC and DC power, but the penetration depth is shallower, and the electrode glows red-hot during AC welding; therefore, DC power is preferred whenever possible.

6. Stainless steel pipe fittings possess certain corrosion resistance (to oxidizing acids, organic acids, and cavitation), heat resistance, and wear resistance. They are commonly used in power plants, chemical plants, and petroleum equipment. Stainless steel pipe fittings have relatively poor weldability; therefore, careful attention should be paid to the welding process, and appropriate welding electrodes should be selected before heat treatment.

7. When welding stainless steel pipe fittings, the electrode coating should be kept dry. Titanium-calcium type electrodes should be dried at 150℃ for 1 hour, and low-hydrogen type electrodes should be dried at 200-250℃ for 1 hour (do not repeatedly dry, otherwise the coating will easily crack and peel off). Prevent the electrode coating from sticking with oil or other contaminants during welding, as this will increase the carbon content of the weld and affect the quality of the weld.

8. During the welding of stainless steel pipe fittings, repeated heating will cause carbide precipitation, reducing corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
